The Leather Bottle
Tucked away in the charming village of Cobham, The Leather Bottle is the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem locals want to keep to themselves-but can’t help sharing. Located at 54-56 The Street, Gravesend DA12 3BZ, this pub-turned-gastronomic delight combines classic British comfort with a warm, countryside atmosphere that’s both inviting and surprisingly refined.
Let’s talk about the vibe first. The Leather Bottle isn’t just another old English pub. It has character. From the moment you step inside, the air-conditioned interior feels cozy but not cramped, traditional but not outdated. The exposed beams, vintage pub signs, and laid-back seating whisper history, while the free Wi-Fi and attentive bar service give it a modern touch. It’s kid-friendly too, making it a great option for relaxed family outings, lazy Sunday brunches, or an early dinner with the grandparents. Parking is free, breakfast is complimentary if you’re staying overnight, and while there’s no pool or pet-friendly policy, the vibe is still wonderfully down-to-earth.
But the real reason people keep coming back? The food. The Leather Bottle doesn’t just serve meals-it curates experiences on a plate. Their Fish and Chips is a local legend: golden, flaky, not too greasy, and paired with mushy peas and tartar sauce that pack a zesty punch. Craving something heartier? The Steak and Ale Pie is unapologetically British, served with lot's of mash potatoes that are buttery and whipped to perfection. If you’re lucky, you might catch the Suet Pie of the Day-one of those menu items that sounds simple but ends up stealing the show.
For burger lovers, the Leather Bottle Fish Burger hits that perfect balance of crunch and softness, with the fish fried just enough to maintain its moist center. Add a pint of San Miguel, and you’ve got yourself a meal worth remembering.
On the lighter side, they offer fresh salads and baked camembert sharing plates-ideal if you’re not in the mood to commit to a full entrée. Garlic bread lovers will also find themselves grinning here. It’s rich, generously portioned, and, dare we say, addictive.
Desserts? Absolutely not to be missed. The Sticky Toffee Pudding is warm, indulgent, and doused in toffee sauce with just the right amount of sweetness. If you’re more of a chocolate devotee, the Salted Caramel & Chocolate Ganache Tart or the Cherry Chocolate Fondant au Chocolat should be on your radar. And for those who prefer a classic finish, the Gypsy Tart and Cheesecake are simple, nostalgic, and beautifully executed.
One of the more pleasant surprises is their High Tea service. It’s not something you’d expect from a place known for steak puddings and ale, but it fits seamlessly into the experience. Delicate sandwiches, warm scones, and a lovely selection of teas make it feel like you’re in a countryside manor house, even if you just popped in for a quick bite.
For seafood fans, the Fillet of Salmon with Potato Dauphinoise and Tenderstem Broccoli, served in a delicate white wine sauce, is a standout. It’s balanced, flavorful, and elegantly plated-yet still feels accessible.
While they don’t offer airport shuttles or fitness centers (because, really, you’re here for the food), the on-site bar more than makes up for it. Whether you’re sipping on a crisp lemonade in the afternoon or a full-bodied ale in the evening, the drink selection is just as thoughtfully curated as the food.
In a region brimming with pubs and gastropubs, The Leather Bottle manages to stand out without trying too hard. It’s the kind of place that effortlessly blends heritage and hospitality with a menu that’s unpretentious but full of intention. Whether you’re popping in for a roast chicken dinner, looking for a decadent dessert, or simply in need of a place that still believes in mash potatoes done right, this Cobham institution more than delivers.
Reviews
This is a fairly local pub to me , and have had a drink there years ago . Today was the first time I've eaten there . I'm not really someone who goes in pubs, but the prices of drinks seemed reasonable. Food wise we went for the steaks at £32.00 each , admittedly not the cheapest in the area, but the quality was worth the extra money. Thick, juicy, tender steaks that didn't even need a steak knife to cook. We eat steaks well done and I have to say , the chef here understands that well done doesn't mean burnt. Staff were exceptional , especially the young man on shift , he went out of his way to make a mocktail for my wife , even asking if she minded a little alcohol in it. Garden was beautifully kept . Well done to the management and the team .. really impressed
Odd paintings (murals?) On the wall. Chairs not really in keeping with the age of the pub and don't match the tables. Loads of events going on which was nice to see. Money raising forlocal charity and so on. So obviously very popular locally.
Great place lovely staff. Recommend the burger had it both nights I was there. Lovely but flattened me
What a fantastic quirky building (cept the chairs), we really enjoyed our visit and was looked after by the male member of staff really well, unfortunately the female just seemed to be off and that put a dampener on the mood. Food and drinks were well received but what was turning out to be a wonderful day was cut short when the card machine started charging twice (as per our notifications and quick online check) and the only response is to phone in a few days if it's not corrected. We intended staying through to dinner and beyond but didn't fancy having to continuously monitor our transactions.
After a long walk, we came here for a pint and some food with our dog. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable when it came to the menu for recommendations and specials. My husband went for beef rib which was huge and just fell off the bone. I had the chicken supreme, which was really tender and full of flavour, the pub is a beautiful traditional cosy setting and just perfect on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Highly recommend.
